To overwrite or not to overwrite?

Palm desktop software allows you to choose what data is transferred between your handheld and PC and how discrepancies are handled.

When your Palm OS-running PDA and desktop software perform a HotSync operation, there are four things that can happen: Your desktop files can overwrite those on your PDA; your PDA can overwrite your desktop; the files can synchronize; or the devices can ignore each other.

Palm not only allows you to decide which of these occurs, it also lets you set different preferences for different applications. Customize your HotSync settings from your Palm desktop software by selecting Custom from the HotSync pulldown menu. A box should pop up that displays each of the applications, or "conduits," that synchronizes on your handheld. Highlight the conduit you want to set and click the Change button. You now hold the power to choose the action you want to occur during synchronization (e.g., desktop overwrites handheld).

Eliminate the fine print

One of the great things about PDAs is their size, which makes them easy to carry around. Unfortunately, this petiteness also means small, hard-to-read type on their screens. But there is a way to increase the font size on devices running the Palm OS.

From a built-in application, such as the date book, tap the pulldown-menu icon in the Graffiti area. Select Options and Font... Or, as a shortcut, simply draw a diagonal line from bottom left to top right in the Graffiti field and then write the letter f. Either way, the Select Font box will pop up and display samples of your three font choices: small, medium, or large.

This procedure changes only the font for the application you’re in, so to change other built-in applications like your address book or to-do list, chose those programs and repeat the above steps.
