How to…Make 2004 your best year yet |

A new year brings out the urge to change, reform, and improve. Unfortunately, most New Year’s resolutions carry little more chance of fulfillment than a wish. Here, though, are six more-promising strategies to boost your business this year. Write it down. When you put your goals on paper, they become more tangible. A written record enables you to review them periodically and track your progress. You can produce formal documents like a business or marketing plan, or you can simply list your yearly goals and the steps you will take to achieve them. Either way, writing them down helps you focus on what you want to accomplish. Get a coach. Some coaches can help you in several aspects of your business; others specialize in technology, marketing, new agents, top producers, or other niches. Many coaches will communicate with you via e-mail and phone. Programs, pricing, and coaching styles vary widely, so inquire with the coaches themselves. Also, ask your colleagues who have hired a coach about their recommendations. Find a mentor. You may be able to find someone who enjoys the type of success you seek and who is willing to share her knowledge with you. Ask someone in your firm or another colleague you admire if you can meet periodically to help guide your career. Your broker or manager may fill this role, but you can’t expect that person to know what you need and seek you out. Go to her and ask. Take time out. Sometimes you’re so busy working on day-to-day issues that you can’t see the big picture. Take a day off to do nothing but assess your current situation and brainstorm ideas that improve your business. Read about it. There are hundreds of books about how to succeed in real estate. Chances are you won’t find a perfect plan in any single title, but there are good ideas you can mix and match to improve your productivity, income, work/life balance, and other goals. Go back to school. No matter your interest, there is a course out there to address it. While real estate classes can help you build toward a designation and earn MCE, you also may want further instruction in other areas like general business topics, computer skills, and marketing.
