Reach out to others

We can bring hope and comfort.

by Mary Frances Burleson   With the new year, most of us make lists and plans to lose weight, exercise, contact past clients, spend more time with family and friends, get organized, etc., etc.

In light of the events of the past months–terrorist attacks, war in Afghanistan, plane crashes–I encourage you to make your plans to follow the directions of First Lady Laura Bush:

"September 11 changed our world. But with each story of sorrow and pain comes one of hope and courage. ...

"When sad things happen, we all have an opportunity to become better people by thinking about others. We can show people we care about them by saying so and by doing nice things for them.

"We love our country because here, we are free. We are free to go to a church or a mosque or a synagogue; free to express our thoughts and feelings; and free to grow up to be whatever we want to be–a firefighter, police officer, or teacher.

"In hours like these, we learn that our faith is an active faith–that we are all called to serve and to care for one another–and to bring hope and comfort where there is despair and sorrow.

"All of this is the work of the living. And ... however long it lasts we will always hold close to the memory of those who have been taken from us.

"More people will find new ways to volunteer, to contribute to make America a better place. Erma Bombeck once said, ‘When I stand before God at the end of my life, I would hope that I would not have a single bit of talent left and could say to Him, "I used everything you gave me."’

"Martin Luther King, Jr., who was speaking at a memorial service for three little girls who were killed in a terrorist act at a church bombing in 1963 said, ‘Life is hard, at times as hard as crucible steel. It has bleak and difficult moments of drought and moments of flood. Like the ever-changing cycle of seasons, life has a piercing chill of its winters, but there is also the soothing warmth of its summers.’

"It feels like winter in our hearts now, but just as the brightest days of summer will be back, so will joy and happiness return to our hearts. Let us reflect on the things that brighten our lives."

In Laura Bush’s life, it’s her faith, her husband, her daughters, her parents and friends. It’s our wonderful country of America.

I also encourage you to take those words and express them to your REALTOR® family. Reach out with concern to each other, help each other, encourage each other, pray for each other. Become involved in your local board or association and TAR. You can give time at your level of ability and be part of the great family.

We need each other! We need you! Happy days!
