Whip up a batch of pics

Perform repetitive image-editing tasks in one step.

Say you typically spend one minute to open a large digital photo and shrink it to an e-mail-friendly file size. It would take you 10 minutes to perform the same maneuver on 10 photos, right? Try one minute for all 10. New math? No, just a more-efficient way to perform digital editing functions on multiple images. It’s called batch processing, and most recent versions of image-editing software have it.

You may need to make a small time investment to learn and set up batch processing, but once you do, you can save hours. Those dozen property pictures that came out looking dark and fuzzy are just a few clicks away from being brightened, sharpened, and saved at an appropriate size for Web posting—the entire folder at once. This feature also gives you the power to rename your photo files. So if you want to change the cryptic names your camera assigns to photos to names you can easily recognize, you can do it simultaneously rather than photo by photo. Just choose something like 123 Oak Ln, and the pictures will be named 123 Oak Ln A, 123 Oak Ln B, and so on.
