TAR 2003 Winter Meeting

The 2003 Winter Meeting concluded Feb. 25 after five days of meetings, education sessions, and networking–and an ice storm. While the weather outside was frightful, meeting attendees found plenty of activities at the Hyatt to occupy their time.

Speaker of the Texas House of Representatives Tom Craddick addressed the TREPAC Investors Breakfast and Awards and spoke of his plans to attract more business to the state. He also discussed the state’s budget deficit, insurance crisis, and the challenges of education funding.

State Rep. Mike Krusee, chairman of the House Transportation Committee, told attendees at the Governmental Affairs Forum how proper transportation planning translates into a healthy economy and strong real estate market.

The TAR board of directors approved several actions, including:

  • the creation of the Texas Association of REALTORS® Housing Opportunity Foundation, a charitable organization providing financial support for affordable-housing initiatives;
  • entering into a non-exclusive relationship with GiftFunder to promote Texas Cares, a downpayment-assistance program whose contributions will be directed to the Texas Association of REALTORS® Housing Opportunity Foundation;
  • the continuation of TAR’s support for TREC as the commission works toward adopting a brokerage minimum-service rule that satisfies all interested parties; and
  • the election of TAR officers for 2004: Dave Dalzell, chairman of the board; Lance Lacy, chairman-elect; Dennis Patillo, secretary/treasurer.
