Smooth move |

Just about everyone who has hired movers a handful of times has a “moving nightmare” story. The Southwest Movers Association aims to change that with its Pinnacle Mover Program. For a mover to qualify, the company must meet or exceed 10 required criteria—items like not having any unresolved Better Business Bureau claims and employing a formal consumer claims policy communicated to all customers. Movers must also total at least 150 points from 16 optional categories, each with their own point totals awarded for compliance. The optional programs include dress codes, alcohol and drug testing, safety programs, and maximum vehicle age, among others. “The program actually started as a result of direction we received from then-governor Bush about having the industry police itself,” says SMA Executive Director Bill Webb. Currently, 18 movers in Texas have earned Pinnacle Mover status. Consumers can find a list on the Web at SouthwestMovers.org. Send questions about ethics to texasrealtor@texasrealtors.com. Not all questions received can be answered.
