by Louise E. Hull I started to think about what life would be like without TAR as a I was reading the results of the TAR Membership Survey recently conducted by our friends at the Real Estate Center at Texas A&M University. More than 4,000 members sent in responses. (I am sure you will be hearing for months to come about this fact or that trend that we learned from the survey). One particular statistic caught my attention. Question 48 asked: "Have you ever attended a TAR convention?" Only 25% of members responded that, yes, they have. One association executive told me I should be thrilled we reached 25% of our membership at that level. I suppose thats true, but Im having a hard time with that. Now, I have never seen myself as the kind of person who looks at the glass as half empty, but I am worrying about the that 75% of membership who have never attended. If you are among the 75% who have never been to a meeting, youre probably saying, "So what?" Many years ago, I probably would have replied the same way. In fact, for my first nine years in the real estate business, I was part of the 75%! Then in 1987, I was told that one of my responsibilities as president of my local association was to attend the TAR convention. I havent missed one since. The opportunities for education and motivation are endless, not to mention the lifelong friendships that are formed. I hope you will start planning now to attend the TAR Convention in New Orleans, August 16-20. We will once again be holding our meeting in conjunction with the Louisiana REALTORS®. I want you to come not for TARs sake, but for your own selfish reasonsto get some MCE or learn new skills, network with other REALTORS® or see the latest products and services (maybe even all of the above), and, of course, to have some fun. If youre on the fence about attending, maybe you should read the part again about it being in New Orleans. Look for more details about the convention in next months magazine and on www.tar.org. I would love to have hundreds of people introduce themselves as first-timers at our next convention. And those 25% who have attended the conventions...spread the word. Tell your colleagues why you go. Even better, bring a few of them along.
