What can you do
without a license?

The kinds of tasks an unlicensed assistant can perform are limited. You can find more info about what’s allowable on the FAQs page of the Legal Tools section of TexasRealtors.com or visit the TREC Web site at www.trec.state.tx.us.

The following chart shows some of the activities unlicensed assistants generally can and cannot do.

Yes—Set appointments to show listings

Yes—Answer the telephone

No—Make calls to determine if a person is interested in buying or selling property

No—Qualify buyers

Yes—Welcome visitors to an open house

Yes—Drive a buyer to a listing

No—Point out features of a house

Yes—Hand out a brochure about a property

No—Answer questions about a property

Yes—Confirm facts that have previously been advertised about
a property

Yes—Place a for sale sign in a yard

No—Help a buyer fill in a contract

Yes—Fill in a contract as directed by a licensee

Yes—Serve as bookkeeper of a real estate firm

Yes—Take photos of properties

Yes—Input data into an MLS as directed by a licensee
