Let there be light
And let building occupants control it.

Automatic lighting controls should save you money, as you or your property manager hold the power to keep costs under control. However, the psychological effect of handing over lighting control to your tenants—even in common areas—could outweigh any savings you see.

According to studies performed by the Lighting Research Center at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, personal control over lighting situations results in higher levels of satisfaction among building occupants and higher diligence and productivity among workers.

Sharing lighting controls can help to ensure that your retail and office tenants have happy and more-productive employees and your residential tenants are more satisfied with their units. It could cost a few dollars on the front end, but think of it as investing in a low-cost tenant-retention strategy.
