REALTORS® are wonderful

Bet you already knew that.

by Mary Frances Burleson   Many REALTORS® from TAR went to the NAR Midyear Meetings in Washington, D.C. We attended several committee meetings and forums. We also visited "The Hill" and met with our representatives to discuss important issues.

We were told at the Board of Directors Meeting by Sen. Bill Frist that everyone in Congress was aware of the 6,000 REALTORS® in Washington–they heard our steps and felt our presence. Not only do REALTORS® give money to the PAC, but we write letters, send e-mails, put election signs in our yards and bumper stickers on our cars, make telephone calls, and we make certain that members in the Texas Legislature and in Congress understand our issues. We discussed the issues not only as REALTORS® but also as tax-paying citizens.

Those of us who attended the Hill Visits found ourselves armed with a great deal of information and support from our Texas Government Affairs staff and our NAR Government Affairs staff. We have learned that collectively we are a powerful influence and we need to continue to make our issues known. Our input can certainly affect the outcome in the studies of insurance issues, taxation issues, private-property rights, mortgage financing–and all of this will certainly benefit our clients.

The NAR Board of Directors voted to build a new REALTOR® building in Washington, D.C., just three blocks from the Capitol. What a wonderful statement this will make–to visitors in Washington and to members of Congress. For more details on the agendas and studies (including information on mold), click onto Realtor.org.

A little closer to home, many REALTORS® in this state are members of the TAR task forces and are spending their time and effort discussing the issues as we prepare for the Texas legislative session in January 2003. It gives me great comfort to know that some of our most-dedicated members are undertaking this work, for I have great confidence in REALTORS®.

In fact, I have so much confidence, I often rely on REALTORS® for help unrelated to real estate. Recently, I was out of the state and had to send a UPS package. When I called the UPS office, I was given complex directions that would involve a lengthy trip. I checked the Yellow Pages and called a nearby REALTOR®’s office and learned an easy-to-find UPS office was just minutes away. On another occasion, I needed the name of a florist in a small Texas town and found it by calling a REALTOR® in a nearby city.

We have a "lifeline" in any community in our state and beyond. REALTORS® are knowledgeable, informed, friendly, and a very sharing group. We should take a great deal of pride in who we are and what we do and the service we render to our clients. We also are a large extended family, and I am proud to be a REALTOR®. REALTORS® are wonderful! Happy day!
