Use the two-legged zoom

Your digital camera can zoom way in on faraway objects, but you should think twice before snapping that close-up. Many digital cameras have both an optical zoom and a digital zoom that combine to get you impressively close. But the optical zoom alone produces higher-quality images than when you also engage the digital zoom. Optical zooms enlarge a picture through the lens, just like with a 35 mm camera. Digital zooms, though, electronically enlarge the image by making the pixels bigger. So if you shoot an image on a three-megapixel camera with a 3X digital zoom, you’ve actually just captured a one-megapixel image. When possible, you are better off using only the optical zoom and moving closer to the subject.
