A small ad touting your services in your local paper might cost you hundreds of dollars. However, you may be able to reach that same vast audience without spending a dime. A letter to the editor gives you a chance to express your opinion, demonstrate your knowledge as a real estate professional, and show that you care about your community—all in a section that gets good readership.
Many papers will publish your title and company, if your profession is germane to the topic of the letter; some even include photos of letter writers.
A good way to gain entry to this section is to make a point or counterpoint related to a recent article—preferably one about real estate.
Make sure not to cross the line into overt self-promotion. And if you don’t get published the first time, send another letter on another topic. Even if you do get published, send another letter. Newspapers have different rules about how often they will print a letter from the same person.
You can find guidelines for submissions in the letters-to-the-editor section of most papers.
