You can estimate how much money you’ll have socked away for retirement in 10 years, 20 years, or 30 years. But how can you predict how much will be enough to support you for the rest of your life? The unknown factor in this equation is your lifespan. If you knew that you had a good chance to live to 85, you might add a few hundred dollars more each month to your IRA.
Of course, your lifespan won’t become apparent until it’s too late to alter your investment strategy. However, researchers at Harvard Medical School and Boston Medical Center have created an online calculator, LivingTo100.com, that gives you a ballpark estimate of how long you can expect to live.
The calculator at LivingTo100.com analyzes your answers to questions organized into five categories—personal, lifestyle and environment, family history, medical, and nutrition and exercise. While the lifespan estimate probably draws the most attention, the analysis includes feedback on each of your answers to assess what you are doing right and what you are doing wrong in terms of your health. The calculator also shows where your biggest health risks are and allows you to change your answers to see how changes in your behavior might affect your life.
Find out what researchers think your lifespan might be. It may affect how to plan for retirement.
