Its a component you put into a building and hope you never have to use, but a fire-sprinkler system can save lives and protect property should a fire ever occur. Recently, Central Sprinkler Company announced a voluntary replacement program that covers costs to replace 35 million Central fire sprinklers with O-ring seals. The sprinklers were manufactured from 1989 to 2000 and were installed in office buildings, warehouses, apartments, hospitals, daycare facilities, schools, and a variety of other types of buildings. The program also covers some "dry" sprinklers with O-rings manufactured between the mid-1970s and June 2001, and 167,000 sprinklers manufactured by Gem Sprinkler Co. and Star Sprinkler Inc. between 1995 and 2001. To determine if your building has sprinklers covered by this program, visit SprinklerReplacement.com or call 800/871-3492. The Web site includes descriptions, photos, and diagrams to help you determine if you have one of the models covered by the program. Central suggests that all fire sprinkler heads should be tested no later than 10 years after installation. Depending on water quality and other factors, more-frequent testing may be appropriate.
