A tool walks up to a bar …

The toolbar at the bottom of your computer screen can be a handy thing. You can place a shortcut to any document, folder, or program you frequently access. Then you need only click that item to quickly launch it.

To add objects to this toolbar (the horizontal gray bar that includes the Start button), right-click your mouse on any unoccupied space on the toolbar and select Toolbars. A popup menu gives you several choices: Address inserts a window where you can type a Web address and launch Internet Explorer directly to that Web page; Links adds your list of links from Internet Explorer; Desktop puts on the toolbar all items from your computer’s desktop; Quick Launch adds small icons for the programs you use most frequently. The New Toolbar selection enables you to browse all your folders and documents and choose any you want to place on your toolbar.

Depending on which item you insert on the toolbar, you may get either an icon for that item or a heading that, when you click it, will expand to show you all the selections available.

You can also drag and drop items onto the toolbar, where they will show up as an icon without a name. If you forget what that icon represents, navigate the pointer over that item and a pop-up box will display a title.
