TAR member companies can now save big on energy costs

Ready for some shocking news? Your company could save up to 20% on electricity costs, thanks to a new Texas Association of REALTORS® program. TAR has negotiated discounted energy rates for its member companies with two electric providers: First Choice Power and Texas Commercial Energy.

Senate Bill 7, the energy deregulation bill, became Texas law on Jan. 1, 2002, opening up most of the state to competition among electricity providers. Some areas, such as Austin and San Antonio, have publicly owned utilities or cooperatives and aren’t subject to the new law, unless they opt in–choosing to compete in the marketplace.

TAR saw energy deregulation as an opportunity to help members–especially commercial practitioners–save money, but waited until the dust settled before jumping in. "We wanted somebody else to be the guinea pig, and they have," said Sam Roberson, TAR senior vice president. "Most of the kinks are ironed out now, especially with the process of switching over the larger-sized businesses."

Although the program is open to all TAR member companies in investor-owned utility areas, commercial enterprises and large- or multiple-office businesses should realize the greatest savings. A residential component, in which TAR members could switch over their own residences and also help clients save money on their electric costs, is in the works.

Both of TAR’s new energy partners, First Choice Power and Texas Commercial Energy, have a growing list of clients such as the Texas Dairy Queen Operators’ Council, Texas Restaurant Association, and Texas Retailers Association.

First Choice and Texas Commercial will conduct free electric-usage assessments for your company, and also provide electric-usage planning and strategy services.

For more information and no-obligation rate comparisons, contact First Choice Power, 866/469-2464, and Texas Commercial Energy, 866/796-0990. To get the best deal, be sure to let them know you’re a member of the Texas Association of REALTORS®. You can also visit these companies on the Web at FirstChoicePower.com and MyTCE.com.
