We covered a lot of ground

Friends, task forces, forms software, and
TREPAC are highlights in an outstanding year.

by Louise E. Hull

Friends, good friends, friends for life,
Anything you need, don’t think twice,
My, oh my. How those years go by,
Friends, good friends, friends for life!

These words make up the chorus of a Texas country song by Gary P. Nunn. As I considered writing my last column for Texas REALTOR® magazine, this chorus kept running through my head. Marty Kramer, editor of the magazine, said this column should sum up the accomplishments of 2000 at TAR. The friends I’ve made for life are the number-one accomplishment for me.

Here are the other top 10 accomplishments from my perspective:

1) We implemented the restructure of TAR and found we can function with a smaller board of directors, an expanded executive board, and lots of members working on task forces.

2) Speaking of task forces, we owe a huge thanks to our task force members who gave up their valuable time for our industry. The task forces appointed in 2000 included two chairman’s task forces: Agency and Relocation Issues. There were also five legislative task forces at work: Homeowners Associations, Manufactured Housing, Premise Liability, TREC Issues, and Interim Studies. Professional Standards, Technology, and Business Issues finalized their work from last year. The task force reports can be read in their entirety on www.tar.org.

3) We participated in 14 regional meetings throughout the state, bringing information from TAR to the membership.

4) TAR extended the hand of friendship to real estate professionals in Mexico through our alliance with the AMPI organization.

5) We approved the translation of all TAR and TREC forms into Spanish to assist our members who work with Spanish-speaking customers and clients.

6) A membership survey with almost 4,000 responses from Texas REALTORS® has helped us better understand the direction our organization needs to take.

7) We worked through one of the best real estate markets Texas has ever seen.

8) We reached our TREPAC goal of raising one million dollars in one calendar year, making us truly the strongest trade association political action committee in Texas.

9) We passed a budget that will provide ZipForm software for contracts for all Texas REALTORS® as a member benefit.

10) We saw our grassroots efforts work as we helped elect officials for private-property rights, including my friend Todd Staples to the Texas Senate. (Congratulations, Todd!)

I guess every president or chairman thinks their management team and executive board are the best ever. But, in my case, this statement is true. You would be hard-pressed to find a group of individuals more dedicated to the real estate industry. My respect for them is unequaled!

Working with the staff at the Texas Association of REALTORS® has certainly been a highlight of my year. I would like to mention their names and thank them specifically for each contribution, but I would fill up the entire magazine. Let me just tell you that I can’t say enough about the quality of the people who work at 1115 San Jacinto Boulevard in Austin.

Thank you all–members, volunteer leaders, and TAR staff–for your hospitality, talent, and commitment. Good people, dedication, and right causes combine to make up the best of times. TAR 2000–here’s to the best of times!
