Farmers turn
land into giant mazes

Rural land may be good for more than farming, ranching, and developing. Some people just like to get lost in it, and hundreds of farmers across the nation are accommodating those people by carving their cornfields into giant mazes, according to the Associated Press. Mazes in shapes such as a broncos head, a sundial, and a school-house clock have popped up from California to New York as farmers look for ways to hold onto their land and fare better financially. Maze pathways are cut directly into the cornstalks, and visitors use handouts with navigational clues to wind their way through. Maze design company Maize LLC says some farmers have made more in the last few years from operating mazes on their land than they made farming the land in the last 20. Maize assists farmers with design and marketing of the mazes. The company has designed 102 corn mazes since 1996 at costs ranging from $6,000 to $60,000. Mazes draw anywhere from 10,000 to 50,000 visitors per season, and most are open from September, when corn is tall, until November after stalks have died. Business is looking good for Maize. In 1998, 15 of the mazes designed by the company were in operation, compared to 59 in 2000. |
