The more you give, the more you get back

The primary reason most people volunteer is simply to help those in need. That’s as it should be. Still, other benefits—often unexpected—come with the community-service experience. Some volunteers find the publicity and goodwill generated for their business makes a difference in prospects’ opinions of them. Others find themselves networking in entirely new circles.

If you want to get involved, you might inquire if your firm or local board participates in community-service activities. Here are some other resources to get you started:

Charity.com – lists charitable and nonprofit organizations

www.hud.gov/volunteering - lists organizations and links to national volunteer programs and clearinghouses

VolunteerMatch.com – provides a search by ZIP code for volunteer opportunities
