How to approach an unfamiliar dog

No matter how safe you play it, you will probably find yourself in the presence of dogs now and then. (No, we’re not talking about competitors with questionable ethics.) Even dogs that look nice or that you met when the owners were around should be considered unpredictable animals. Here, then, are a few reminders to keep you on a canine’s good side:

  • Don’t approach a dog even if it’s chained or tied
  • When approached by a dog, do not move, make eye contact, scream, or run away
  • Never disturb a dog that’s sleeping, eating, or caring for puppies
  • If knocked down by a dog, tuck into a ball and put your hands and arms over your head, neck, face, and ears
  • Do not try to separate two dogs or intervene in a dog fight
  • If you are bitten, seek immediate medical attention. Contact authorities and give them as much information about the dog as possible
